COVID 19 - What have we learnt about our ourselves?
I found this photo from one of our diving trips yesterday and it made me think about the number of conversations I've had over the last couple of weeks, as we settle back into some sort of normality with our lives. The idea of being separated from our known to the unknown - of feeling like we were living on top looking beneath us for much of the time.
Numerous conversations have been around how we coped in Lockdown and what we did with the time - even looking back how quickly the time actually went. So the big question for many is how are we dealing with coming out of Lockdown and adjusting back to our semi normal lives in Lockdown 2.
For me it is a combination of what have we actually learnt about ourselves in our lockdown time and how we manage those changes. I've done a lot of thinking and reflection around this and our personal wellbeing - not just for myself but also for those that I work with. Our students, our colleagues, our families.
For some there has been a grieving period of what was...for some it is a time for deep reflection about what they truly value and what and who is important to them ...for some it is a time of excitement as they innovate and change the way they have lived their lives... for some a frightening time as financial security is threatened. What is sure for everyone is that the Lockdown had a profound affect on all our us in some way.
A quote popped up this morning in my Facebook feed from a few years ago and I realised how relevant it was to the way that many of us are feeling and how we can move forward.
" We are our own griefs, we are our happiness and we are our own remedies" Huseyn Raza
Coaching has the power to help us through this time. A coach has the skills to help us reflect honestly and openly, then help us to set a goal and move forward. For me, I hope that people have the time to look at what they have really learnt about themselves. How do you handle chaos and our complex world? How do you handle not having the social contact or being isolated from past things we enjoyed such as concerts and going out for dinner? Do you link these things with your identity (another post to come!)
I've learnt that I value my family time, my alone time and my thinking time. I've learnt that my health and wellbeing come first at all times and this is really important to me. I've learnt to breathe more, to take more time to be more kind and to keep coming back to how to make some sense of the complex world from the chaotic world. I've also learnt that I have my own identity that is not tied in what others think , to my job or to the traits I have - more to come on this one as well.
- What have your learnt about yourself?
- How can a coach help you work through things so that you can continue to grow and develop?
- What are your values?
- How can you use your own grief, your own happiness and your remedies?
