Coaching for Transformation

As a coach I mainly work with educators - I coach to help transform the adults that I work with so that outcomes for students improves. In order to do this I work with adults to help them identify their beliefs, values and their own teaching practice. Along this journey I have changed and developed as a coach, always transforming myself and my practice, so that I can create the conditions for others to thrive in, so that they can reach their full potential. The great thing about the journey so far, is the amount of self reflection and learning about myself that I have discovered and the tools that I have used to help me do this. These tools are all things we can access and develop within ourselves.

Elena Aguliar in her work on "The Art of Coaching" defines transformation as an "end result which is almost unrecognizable from its previous form, a massive change that is so thorough that until we are there it is unimaginable"

In this view coaching becomes the vehicle in which we have the power to transform another person and ourselves. It allows as a coach to challenge the person we work with, for the coachee to start a journey of self discovery which long term has a profound and lasting affect on them. This requires the coachee to form a new way of being. Coaching empowers and enlivens creativity, connection to values and personal responsibility. I believe strongly to do this we need as coaches to support the person to set goals that are inspirational for them and worthwhile - ones which challenge them , yet provide enough scaffolding and support along the way in which to guide them. The power of a coach is that they can create the right conditions in which deep reflection and learning can take place.

The coach can walk alongside their
coachee and help them move through their stage of human development (another whole post!)

Coaching can't be effective though if the client doesn't engage with them or want to have coaching. We can't force people to learn, just as we can't force people to move through a stage of development - it needs to come from within and needs to come from the realization that any worthwhile growth needs someone to point out our blind spots.
In our complex world coaching is imperative if we are going to continue to transform ourselves and keep pace of the complex and somewhat chaotic world. As we go forward we need to ask ourselves...

  • Why do I need to transform myself?
  • Am I ready to take the step into the unknown and really challenge my values, beliefs and ideas about who I am?
  • How am I preparing myself with the skills I need to cope in this complex and challenging world?
  • What will be the first thing I do?
